3 questions to Matteo Iachino

13/09/2022

By linking Imperia in Italy to Giraglia in Corsica on September 8th, the Italian Matteo Iachino achieved a unique performance, covering 160 km in just over 6 hours on the Ligurian Sea. A few days later, he tells Windsurfjournal.com about this sporting and human adventure which shows, once again, the potential of the foil support...

Windsurfjournal.com: How did the project to cross the Ligurian Sea come about?
Matteo Iachino: The windsurfers from Liguria always dreamed about it. I grew up here, hearing people on the beach talking about windsurfing there all the time. It s a dream come true for me and for all the windsurfers from my region. The project is called “Un solo mare per tutti” and integrates a social part, bringing kids to our local beaches to clean them up all together and learn how fun windsurfing is.

WJ: What material did you choose, and what was the most difficult part of the 6 hours of sailing?
MI: I used my 85 wide Starboard Slalom Foil board with Severne HG5 8.0 sail and medium front wing on my Z slalom foil. The beginning with almost no wind for 3 km was difficult, but the end was worse. After 140 km, we got stuck in a wind hole about 10 km from our destination. Then I got a few gusts and I managed to reach Giraglia island.

WJ: The windfoil allows new challenges, Tristan Algret made the tour of Guadeloupe, Pierre Mortefon and William Huppert made the Thalassa Jersey Crossing... Does this experience make you want to do other crossings ?
MI: Of course it does. I think it's a natural attraction for whoever goes windsurfing on the sea and with the foil you can have really high average speeds making everything more fun and it's also easier finding the right conditions.
