Waiting for real waves

08/07/2023

The wind may have been blowing steadily on Friday at the Gran Canaria Windsurf World Cup in Pozo Izquierdo, but the waves were still too small... And while the senior wave tables failed to get underway, the U20s and Masters put on a show with victories for Liam Dunkerbeck and Ben Proffitt.

Although the wind is blowing non-stop at Pozo Izquierdo for this Gran Canaria Windsurf World Cup, the waves have been shy for nearly a week... But this event has plenty of resources and after the U15, U17 and U20 girls on Thursday, it's the turn of the most prestigious junior category, the U20s, and the Masters, to have their wave event...
Liam Dunkerbeck was the favourite and dominated the event for much of the day, putting in a string of top scores in both jumping and surfing to win the final against the promising Danish rider Tobias Bjornaa. After a tie-break heat, Greece's Lennart Neubauer got the better of Germany's Anton Ritcher to prove that he's not just a very good freestyler.

Well known for his commentary during live streams on the PWA World Tour, Ben Proffitt from England was on the other side of the microphone on Friday. Despite a complicated final and a passage through the rocks on the right of the Pozo Izquierdo spot, K-800 proved that he is still a very good waverider and won the Masters category ahead of local riders Dario Ojeda and Toni Pijoan.
Saturday is the penultimate day of the Gran Canaria Windsurf World Cup
, with the wind still in the forecast but the waves as small as ever for a senior wave event worthy of the name...
