Titles revealed and drama in Japan

14/11/2023

The tension was palpable on Tuesday during the final day of the Fly! ANA Windsurfing World Cup in Yokosuka, Japan. And what should have been a day of celebration turned into unexpected drama as Johan Søe was disqualified following discrepancies over his registered equipment.

The day began under sunny skies on Tuesday for the final day of the Fly! ANA Windsurfing World Cup, but the atmosphere took an unexpected turn when irregularities were discovered in Johan Søe's equipment. Close examination revealed that his sail had been altered from its original factory specification, in contravention of strict PWA World Tour rules. This sad news has resulted in Søe's outright disqualification from the final event in Japan.

Despite the controversy, the day was full of great moments. Lina Eržen, aged just 18, made a sensational debut on the PWA World Tour, winning 4 consecutive eliminations and taking the final event in Japan. On the women's side, Blanca Alabau claimed her 1st PWA World Champion title in slalom, bringing to a close a year marked by regular victories and podium finishes. Justine Lemeteyer finished the season as runner-up for the 2nd year running, while Marion Mortefon completed the overall podium.

In the men's category, Matteo Iachino finally put an end to his quest for a 2nd world title. His consistent performances throughout the season earned him a well-deserved victory. Amado Vrieswijk confirmed his victory at Sylt in Germany a few weeks earlier by winning this event in Japan, ending the season in style as runner-up. He is ahead of Maciek Rutkowski and Pierre Mortefon in the annual rankings for the discipline.
With Johan Søe's disqualification, and only time will tell if there was deliberate cheating or not, this slalom season on the PWA World Tour has come to an unexpected end, with a mixed bag between a fin/foil combination that clearly didn't convince and competitors who were still fewer in number this year on the world tour.
