The freestylers take to the track

02/08/2023

After 5 days dedicated to slalom, the freestylers took possession of the Sotavento spot on Tuesday at the Fuerteventura Windsurf World Cup, giving them the chance to put on a great show and a few surprises...
As on the previous day, the wind is blowing between 30 and 35 knots at Sotavento on the island of Fuerteventura this Tuesday, accompanied by a swell that is providing some fine ramps, with conditions improving as the hours go by and the tide goes out. With the slalom competition over, the freestylers now have the spot to themselves, and for 5 days too.

In the men's competition, reigning world champion Adrien Bosson played out his repertoire, eliminating Michael Chovan, Robin van Linden and Sam Esteve to secure a place in the top 4. In the semi-finals, he will face Yentel Caers, who posted the best score of the day with 39.2 points in the quarter-final against Antoine Albert. Antony Ruenes, another Frenchman, also made his mark. Although he was announced eliminated by his team-mate Takuma Sugi in the 2nd round, the use of video revealed that some of Ruenes' manoeuvres had been incorrectly noted, reversing the trend in his favour. The Frenchman followed up with a fine comeback at the end of the heat against Niclas Nebelung, propelling him into the top 4.

One of the day's most memorable battles was between Amado Vrieswijk and Balz Müller in the quarter-finals. Vrieswijk put on a real festival and finished the day with the 2nd best score of the competition, 39.1 points, proving that he still has the resources when he was ready to give up the discipline!
In the women's event, with 8 competitors in the field and Sarah-Quita Offringa vying for a 14th world title in the discipline, Offringa herself, Lina Erpenstein (making her freestyle competition debut), Oda Johanne and Maaike Huvermann will meet in the semi-finals on Wednesday.
Wednesday will be the 2nd day of freestyle competition at the Fuerteventura Windsurf World Cup, with more wind forecast.
