PWA World Tour, changes in slalom!

16/01/2024

With the PWA World Tour calendar due to be unveiled in the next few days, a few new things are starting to leak out, including the separation of the foil and fin disciplines and a little spice added to the races...

With the PWA World Tour calendar due to be unveiled in the next few days, it's no secret that the foil and fin disciplines will now be separated into separate events. As a reminder, it was in 2020 that the 2 disciplines were mixed into 1, the basic idea being to sail in light winds with foils and in strong winds with fins. But this idea quickly proved to be totally outdated, because with 30 knots of wind (and more), the fin competitors were no longer competitive. In 2024, the fin events should be planned on windy spots (Pozo Izquierdo and Fuerteventura to be confirmed) with specific rankings and world titles.

But, in a new development, according to sources close to the PWA World Tour, these same fin races could be 'spiced up' with a new race format including obstacles to overcome on the course (buoys) or even running beach starts, as in the 80s! More generally, the idea would be to have 8/10 race options in total and to choose one from time to time!
While the likelihood of launching beach starts at Pozo Izquierdo seems unlikely (the pebble beach is not very comfortable), and while it is not a question of reviving Super-X, a discipline that was abandoned in 2007, this is a new element to be confirmed shortly, which should fuel much debate and discussion...
