Daida Moreno, queen of Pozo

03/07/2023

In less radical conditions than the day before, the women in waves entered the Gran Canaria Windsurf World Cup on Sunday with a day that smiled on the inevitable Daida Moreno, who is unstoppable on home turf. The men's double elimination, which got underway in the afternoon, means that the men's table can move forward...

With 25 to 35 knots of breeze and falling waves, the backdrop for Sunday's 2nd day of the Gran Canaria Windsurf World Cup was very different from Saturday's men's race. In these more acceptable conditions, it was the 17 women entered in the wave discipline who took to the water.
Despite some good intentions in the early rounds, the final four saw the usual protagonists at this level of the competition: the Moreno sisters, Sarah-Quita Offringa and Justyna Sniady.

By beating Iballa Moreno in the semi-final, Sarah-Quita Offringa challenged her sister Daida in the final, a final in which ARU-91 put up some resistance but was unable to win despite showing great control over her jumps. Confident on a Pozo Izquierdo spot she knows like the back of her hand, Daida Moreno dominated and made the difference in the surf. In the losers' final, her sister Iballa beat Poland's Justyna Sniady.
Shortly after 4pm, as the conditions improved slightly, it was the men's turn to take to the water with the start of the double elimination. By beating his compatriot Antony Ruenes, Arthur Arutkin wins his ticket for the rest of the competition, as do Jose Romero, Moritz Mauch, Hayata Ishii, Federico Morisio, Morgan Noireaux, Adam Warchol, Takara Ishii, Mike Friedl, Miguel Chapuis and Omar Sanchez. The winner of the Fiji Surf Pro 1 month earlier, Baptiste Cloarec, was eliminated by Germany's Henri Kolberg.
The Gran Canaria Windsurf World Cup
continues on Monday, with the priority still given to the wave event, but with the slalomers set to compete in their first races, depending on the day's conditions.
