Complicated weather in Torbole

07/07/2023

Day 4 of the iQFOil Youth & Junior European Championships, Thursday tested the patience and nerves of the competitors, with the races finally getting underway at the end of the day and the positions being refined ahead of the penultimate day of competition on Friday.

Thursday's programme for the iQFOil Youth & Junior European Championships was simple: 2 rounds of the Racing Race for all categories, followed by the traditional Marathon. But the weather conditions decided otherwise, with rain and light winds. After a long wait and a lot of patience, it was at around 5pm that the Ora, the southerly thermal, finally lifted for the new Racing Races.
In the U19 men's category, Harry Joyner emerged victorious from a particularly hard-fought day, closely followed by Federico Pilloni. Tied on points with the Italian, Joyner triumphed in the final race, taking him to the top step of the podium. Jacopo Gavioli brilliantly retained his 3rd place. In the U19 women's category, Carola Colasanto relegated Maya Gysler to 2nd place overall, while Estonia's Emma Viktoria Millend took 3rd place.

The U17 boys put up a good fight in an already weakening wind, with Peleg Rajuan once again coming out on top. France's Kylian Manhavel remained in 2nd place, followed by Poland's Jakub Guzlecki. Still in 3rd place that morning, local rider Mattia Saoncella dropped to 14th place, proving that every mistake has major consequences. The wind dropped rapidly at the very end of the afternoon after an unsuccessful attempt to launch a 2nd race for all categories.
Friday is the penultimate day of the iQFOil Youth & Junior European Championships, with the Marathon on the programme and a place in the top 10 to qualify for the medal races on Saturday.
