Anything is still possible

4 more eliminations in the women's category and 3 in the men's category on Sunday in Sotavento mean that Sara-Quita Offringa and Nicolas Goyard are leading the Fuerteventura Windsurf World Cup. But anything is possible on the final day of competition on Monday.
After a calm day on Saturday, the wind is back in Sotavento on Sunday for the 4th day of the Fuerteventura Windsurf World Cup, which is dedicated to the slalom discipline. With anemometers fluctuating between 15 and 30 knots, the foil sailors are in the majority and at the top of the overall standings.

After his costly mistake the day before, Nicolas Goyard bounced back strongly to win the first race of the day and regain the lead of the championship after relinquishing pole position to Johan Soe. The gap between the two men is now just 1.9 points, meaning there is no room for error for either of them until the final day of competition on Monday. While the battle for the overall title seems to be coming down to a fierce duel between Goyard and Soe, Matteo Iachino is still waiting in the wings. The 2016 World Champion in the discipline had a very good day with a win, a performance that sees him climb to 3rd place in the overall standings. Maciek Rutkowski is also making up for lost time. The current PWA World Tour leader qualified for all of the day's finals and climbed to 4th place overall. Just 3 points behind Iachino, Rutkowski now has his sights set on a podium finish. After a more complicated day, Amado Vrieswijk remains a serious contender for the podium. The top 10 is completed by strong contenders such as Bruno Martini, Pierre Mortefon, Enrico Marotti, Michele Becker and Daniele Benedetti.

In the women's category, Sara-Quita Offringa had only one top 3 finish on Sunday. The lighter breeze than on previous days is making it harder for her to keep up with the foiling competition. And although she is still in the lead, Offringa will have to pray for a stronger trade wind on Monday or risk seeing her lead seriously eroded. With 3 wins out of a possible 4, Marion Mortefon had a fine day, closing the gap from 12.5 points to just 4.6. Blanca Alabau had her best performance since the start of the event. The current leader of the annual rankings took two second places and a third before ending the day with a victory. This puts her in the top 3 on the eve of the event. Justine Lemeteyer put in a solid performance but lost a place and is now in 4th place.
The final day of racing on Monday promises to be an exciting one, with the wind forecast to be between 18 and 24 knots and the rankings set to change even more...
