All bets are (almost) off

Tensions are running high with 1 day to go before the end of the Fly! ANA Windsurfing World Cup in Japan, after Monday's fickle winds of between 8 and 28 knots. And with 24 hours to go before the end of the last event of the season, Amado Vrieswijk and Lina Eržen lead the standings.

Amado Vrieswijk is determined to repeat his performances of recent weeks. The 27-year-old NB-20 scored a crucial victory this Monday in Japan in Elimination 6, his 2nd of the event, propelling him to the top of the men's ranking. However, Johan Søe, in search of his 1st world title, remains a formidable competitor despite a complicated semi-final. Søe, just 1 point behind Vrieswijk, will have to give his all if he is to spring a surprise on the final day. Matteo Iachino, also in contention for the world title, is experiencing a rollercoaster ride on Monday. A missed jibe in elimination 5 jeopardized his ambitions, but the Italian showed his determination by taking 3rd place in the following elimination. Nothing is decided for Iachino, who will have to hope for favorable conditions to reverse the trend. The other Italian, Daniele Benedetti, earned his first stripes with a victory in elimination 5, a performance that propelled him to 4th place overall.

On the women's side, Lina Eržen continues to impress with 2 consecutive victories on this penultimate day. At just 18 years of age, the Slovenian seems destined to claim her 1st competitive victory on the PWA World Tour, barring a catastrophe on the final day. Eržen's main pursuer, Blanca Alabau, had a mixed day with 4th and 8th places. But, with a comfortable lead in the standings, Alabau remains well placed to claim her 1st world title should Eržen stumble. World title contender Justine Lemeteyer of France saw her hopes dashed after a fall in Elimination 5. Despite an outstanding performance, she is likely to end the year as runner-up.
