422 competitors and the first races in Torbole

04/07/2023

The iQFOil Youth & Junior European Championships kick off in Torbole, Italy, with a record 422 entries representing 36 nations. And while the new Olympic choice will not take effect until 2024 in Paris, this competition is already generating enthusiasm among young people who are looking to the future, particularly the 2028 Games.

After 2 days of preparation and a colourful opening ceremony attended by over 600 people, the iQFOil Youth & Junior European Championships get underway on Lake Garda on Monday 3 July. Among the most represented nations are France, Poland, Israel and, of course, Italy. But there's plenty of diversity too, with non-European countries such as Australia, Hong Kong, China, India, Peru, Singapore, the United States, Brazil, Japan and Mexico taking part in the Open category.
The 1st day of competition offered windy conditions, allowing almost all the categories to contest 2 races in the Course Racing format. In the afternoon, a thunderstorm temporarily interrupted the races and drenched the participants. Once the bad weather had passed, the southerly wind returned, providing sufficient conditions for the women's categories to compete in 2 additional races.

From the outset, the Italian delegation showed determination and aggression in almost every category. In the Under-19s, Australian Harry Joyner and Italian Federico Alan Pilloni tied for the lead, each taking 2 wins. In the Under 17s, Israeli Peleg Rajuan took 1st place after 2 races, closely followed by Turkey's Artun Senoi and another Israeli, Kifir Gefen.
In the U19 girls' category, Italy's Carola Colasanto took the lead after finishing 11th and winning 3 races. Norway's Maya Gysler took 2nd place, while 3rd place went to Israel's Danielle Ziv. In the Under 17 category, it was another Italian who took the lead, Medea Falcioni, also leader in the Under 15s.
This 1st day of competition sets the tone for the iQFOil Youth & Junior European Championships in Torbole, with some determined young windsurfers looking forward to the final outcome and the presentation of the continental titles on Saturday 8 July.
