3 questions to Sebastian Koerdel

27/10/2022

Among the best slalom sailors in the world on the PWA World Tour, German Sebastian Koerdel saw his efforts rewarded on the Olympic platform at the iQFOil World Championships in Brest. Winner of 10 of the 15 races contested (including the medal race), he tells Windsurfjournal.com about this major title in his career.

Windsurfjournal.com: This victory sounds like a great reward for your commitment to the iQFOil support since the beginning, can you confirm this?
Sebastian Koerdel: Yeah, it is definitely the biggest achievement of my career. Feels amazing to have this success now and look into the future with optimism.

WJ: The general level was very high in this event and everyone has improved over the last few months, what do you think made the difference in your favour?
SK: The level in the iQFOil fleet is unreal! All the big nations are pushing and have dedicated people that look after physical training, race craft, nutrition and so on. If you race someone in iQFOil you not only race him but the whole team behind the athlete. For me that was also a big positive. Working with my coach I improved a lot and got more confident. I can not say it was a single thing that made the difference but more like an accumulation of all the small things we’ve been working on.

WJ: You also have a career on the PWA World Tour with an 8th place in Sylt few weeks ago, how do you manage the 2 disciplines and will you have to make a choice at some point?
SK: Yes, racing in the PWA World Tour is a lot of fun, the gear is fast and the racing is high adrenaline. For now I did both jobs and it worked out quite well, but for the future especially going into 2024 the priority will be on the iQFOil. That does not mean I will not race in the PWA anymore but if there is an iQFOil event and a PWA one at the same time I’ll have to choose the first one.
