3 questions to Blanca Alabau

13/07/2023

By winning the Gran Canaria Windsurf World Cup in Pozo Izquierdo last week, Spain's Blanca Alabau also took the lead in the annual slalom rankings ahead of the 3rd leg in Fuerteventura. For Windsurfjournal.com, she talks about her 1st ever victory on the PWA World Tour and the fin/foil combination in competition.

Windsurfjournal.com: In what frame of mind did you arrive at Pozo Izquierdo, knowing that the wind could be very strong or more moderate and favourable to foiling?
Blanca Alabau: I was really nervous before Pozo! The conditions in Pozo are hard. I was ready for anything. My fin was always ready on the beach. But from race number 1 I realised that I could be competitive with the speed I had on the foil.

WJ: 15 races, 6 wins and almost always in the top 3. How do you feel about this victory, which now puts you at the top of the annual rankings?
BA: It felt amazing! I had the speed and control to focus on the race, so it was really fun to battle around the course with the fins on. I had a good mindset and felt very relaxed from day 0. The goal for this year was to fight for the title and that's what I'm doing. I am still not finished, so I will stop this emotion and start from scratch for the next event. I can't wait to get back on the track.

WJ: You've really turned your slalom sailing towards foiling. How do you feel about this mixed fin/foil format and the many discussions on the subject?
BA: I trained in these conditions in Tenerife and knew I was more efficient on foil, so I went for it from day one. I got a lot of comments about how cool it was to see both together. I think people are starting to love the mix, especially when they understand the difference. It was very exciting to race together.
