Where are they now - Nik Baker

20/06/2022

For many years, the Englishman Nik Baker was one of the world's best windsurfers. Now 51 years old and still as passionate as ever, he answers the questions of Windsurfjournal.com in our "Where are they now" section.

Windsurfjournal.com: Can you tell us about your life since you stopped your professional windsurfing career?
Nik Baker: I retired from pro windsurfing at 38, I’m now 51. I’m the UK agent for Boards & More and run K66 Distribution bringing Fanatic, Duotone (all products except kiting) and ION Water into the UK market. I have also enjoyed my motorbiking in recent years and last year won the SV Mini Twin British Championships on my Suzuki SV 650, fulfilling a life long dream! I have brought up my two boys Brandon (almost 13) and Bailey (16) and recently in the last 3 weeks finalised my divorce. Of course I live right by the beach!

WJ: What memories do you have of all those years?
NB: Amazing memories! 20 years on the Tour. Travelling the world since my first competition in Cape Verde. Winning the Aloha Classic in 1999 beating Robby Naish in the final. 6 x Indoor World Champion. The indoor circuit was the closest I could ever become to being a rockstar! I so enjoyed meeting people all around the world and my only disappointment now is not having the time in my current life to keep the connections with these friends as much as I would like.

WJ: Are you still interested in professional windsurfing, and how do you look at the sport today and its evolution?
NB: I LOVE windsurfing still in all sorts of conditions, but waves remain what I love most about windsurfing. In the last 5/6 years it’s all about the waves. In light winds now you’ll find me wing foiling but if there’s swell about I’m windsurfing. It has taken me a longtime to get past the point on being the best on the water - but now I can go out and enjoy myself just sailing with friends!
