The last chance

Day 3 of the Maui Strong Aloha Classic on Monday saw the double elimination of the wave event begin with 2 rounds completed. With no live streaming and only a trickle of information, the final at Hookipa will come to a close on Friday, to the virtual indifference of the general public...

The weather conditions on the island of Maui in Hawaii have been capricious this autumn, but since Saturday, the Hookipa spot has put on a great show despite the occasional light wind. And on this Monday, after Sarah-Quita Offringa and Antoine Martin's victory the day before, it's the men's double elimination that's in the spotlight, as well as the Masters category of the PWA/IWT Unified Wave Tour. But, despite being the annual grand final in the wave event, this 3rd day of the Maui Strong Aloha Classic will not feature live streaming, much to the disappointment of many fans behind their screens.
After a disappointing first day, Marc Paré put in an exceptional performance to put himself back in the running for the title. The Spaniard began his comeback with 2 consecutive heat victories. His most outstanding feat of the day was a 360, which earned him the best score of the day. But the next stage for Paré promises to be a tough one, as he will be in direct competition with heavyweights such as Thomas Traversa, Levi Siver and Ricardo Campello for a place in the top 7.

Siver, like Paré, is having a good day, establishing himself as a serious contender. Ricardo Campello faces a crucial upcoming round to keep his world title hopes alive. The pressure is on for V-111 if it is to fight for its first world championship title. In the bottom half of the table elimination, Japan's Takara Ishii is also making a fine comeback and will be up against 3 locals, including three-time Aloha Classic winner Morgan Noireaux, Kai Lenny and Jake Schettewi.
The next 2 days promise to be moments of respite, with Wednesday already cancelled. On Thursday, a new swell is set to hit the island of Maui, and the trade winds should be back, promising an epic finale.
