The first surprises

07/04/2024

In light winds and a good swell, the Surazo Infernal Chile World Cup offered its 1st batch of surprise eliminations, with Sarah Hauser and Bernd Roediger now left to watch the end of the competition...

Demanding conditions, a powerful swell and light winds marked the start of another day of competition in Matanzas, Chile, on the 2nd leg of the PWA IWT Wave Tour season. With the finals just around the corner, this Saturday is a chance for some to shine, and for others, a major challenge.
In the women's heat, Justyna Sniady and Coraline Foveau progressed safely to the next round. The next heat offered the 1st surprise of the day, and of this event, with a heat won by Lina Erpenstein followed by 14-year-old Belgian Sol Degrieck. With solid, aggressive surfing, she made the difference and took 2nd place, eliminating Sarah Hauser, the world number 2, in the process! Alexia Kiefer Quintana and Pauline Katz also won their ticket for the next round.

On the men's side, only the last 3 heats of the 3rd round got underway and Marino Gil proved that he was in good form by winning ahead of Liam Dunkerbeck. In the next heat, Bernd Roediger, the current world number one after his victory in Japan, had a difficult day, eliminated in a tight heat where Thomas Traversa shone with his aggressive and varied style. The demanding conditions allowed waveriders like Victor Fernandez to shine, thanks to his versatility.
On Sunday, the finals promise an even more intense show, with swell expected to increase and a stronger wind.
