Shahar Tibi and Luuc van Opzeeland take victory

With the wind returning to The Hague on Saturday for the final day of the Allianz Sailing World Championships, Shahar Tibi and Luuc van Opzeeland took the coveted world title...
After Friday, when conditions were too light and the competitors stayed ashore, Saturday saw the return of the wind, with 14 knots of southerly for the medal races.

From the quarter-finals onwards, the tension was palpable on the start line, with the men's quarter-final seeing the disqualifications of Frenchman Thomas Goyard and Australian Grae Morris for premature starts. Although Italy's Nicolo Renna shone for much of the week, it was local rider Luuc van Opzeeland who came out on top with a fine lead. Germany's Sebastien Kördel took 2nd place, confirming his good form at the moment, followed by Nicolo Renna who, although disappointed, is still going strong after the Test Event in Marseille a month earlier.

In the women's race, it was almost the same story: after leading the event for several days, England's Emma Wilson was unable to resist the comeback of two Israeli riders, Shahar Tibi and Katy Spychakov, who took the top 2 places overall. After a great week's racing, France's Hélène Noesmoen confirmed her return to top form and took 5th place behind Norway's Mina Mobekk.
With less than a year to go to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, these Allianz Sailing World Championships show that there are plenty of contenders and that anything is still possible in the months to come between now and the final deadline.
