Light winds and small waves at Hookipa

29/10/2023

After 6 days of waiting for ideal conditions, the Maui Strong Aloha Classic 2023 finally got underway in Hookipa on Saturday. Despite a light wind and modest waves, the world's windsurfing elite put on a great show with few surprises.

Takara Ishii and local Kai Lenny got the ball rolling by qualifying brilliantly for the Round of 16, showing exceptional ease in Ho'okipa. The day took a disappointing turn for world title contenders Sarah Hauser and Marc Paré, who were eliminated in the Round of 8. The heat between Marc Paré, Camille Juban and Marino Gil took an unexpected turn. Despite an impressive goiter at the end of the heat, Paré was unable to match the performances of Juban and Gil, dashing his hopes of a world title. Robby Swift, in fine form, won heat 3, eliminating three-time world champion Victor Fernandez in the process. Ricardo Campello, world leader, survived a tense heat to secure 2nd place behind Bernd Roediger, who shone with a sublime goiter.
Maui locals Graham Ezzy and Morgan Noireaux shone in their respective heats. Antoine Martin, despite an injury sustained a few weeks earlier, won heat 6 with confidence. The men's event culminated in a heat between Thomas Traversa and Marcilio Browne. Traversa secured his place in the quarter-finals, while Browne, who was very selective in his choice of waves, took 2nd place.

On the women's side, the battle for the semi-finals was fierce. Jane Seman won a hard-fought quarter-final, while Sarah Hauser was surprisingly eliminated, having to wait for the double elimination. Maria Behrens created a surprise by winning the 2nd quarter-final, while Maria Andrés showed impressive control in the 3rd. Sarah-Quita Offringa, the current leader, secured her place in the semi-finals alongside Frenchwoman Coraline Foveau.
The Maui Strong Aloha Classic
is only just getting underway, with the weather forecast to be optimistic and Sunday set to be a busy day for the rest of the competition.
