Kantor and van Opzeeland win in Lanzarote

19/12/2023

The last iQFOil event of the season took place on the Canary island of Lanzarote from 10 to 15 December, with Luuc van Opzeeland and Sharon Kantor underlining their excellent form less than 8 months ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

A total of 160 participants from 30 nations gathered in Lanzarote in the Canaries for the iQFOil Games from 10 to 15 December, the last showdown of the season in the Olympic series and an opportunity to test the Marina Rubicón race course, which will host the world championships next January.
From day 1, Israel's Sharon Kantor led the women's field and remained in the lead until the day of the final. In the men's race, Nicolo Renna, Nicolas Goyard and Kiran Badloe were level on points after day 1, before Luuc van Opzeeland took the lead on day 2. Even on the 4th day of competition, the positions of the leaders did not change during the Marathon, as Luuc van Opzeeland won the race around the island of Los Lobos, off the coast of Fuerteventura, in 49 minutes. He was followed in the women's race by Sharon Kantor.

On Friday 15 December, on the final day of the medal races, the positions behind the leaders changed significantly, with the British sailor Finn Hawkins and the Dane Johan Søe taking 2nd and 3rd place in the men's race. Luuc van Opzeeland confirmed his supremacy, while Nicolas Goyard finished 4th. In the women's category, Sharon Kantor ended her 2023 season with another victory, followed by her compatriots Tamar Steinberg and Katy Spycharov for an all-Israeli podium!
