Intense racing in The Hague

18/08/2023

Racing at the Allianz Sailing World Championships in The Hague, Netherlands, continued on Thursday with a steadier breeze than in previous days. After 14 valid races over 4 days, Emma Wilson and Nicolo Renna lead the overall standings with 2 days to go.
After 3 days of Slalom racing, a steady wind of around 13 knots is seeing the competitors of the Allianz Sailing World Championships take to the water for Course Racing races on Thursday for the 4th day of competition. With 5 races on the day's programme, the aim is to make up for the races lost on the previous days, with the competitors now split into Gold and Silver fleets.

In a format that calls for a real sense of tactics, Italy's Nicolo Renna extended his lead in the men's race, ending a good day with victory. With 28 points, he has an 11.3-point lead over defending champion Sebastian Kördel, with Luuc van Opzeeland now in 3rd place, albeit only 0.7 points behind. The only Frenchmen in the top 10, Louis Pignolet and Thomas Goyard are 6th and 7th.

In the women's category, England's Emma Wilson retained her 1st place with an 11-point lead over Shahar Tibi, the first of the three Israelis to feature in the top 5. Katy Spychakov is 3rd and her Israeli compatriot Sharon Kantor, 5th, who won the Test Event in Marseille 1 month earlier. Reigning champion Marta Maggetti of Italy had a good day and is now 4th, while France's Hélène Noesmoen did not have her best day of the week and is now 8th.
