Intense battles

01/02/2024

The iQFOil World Championships in Lanzarote continue to deliver a fine spectacle and some exceptional performances in ideal conditions. And despite being ill, Frenchman Nicolas Goyard made his mark on Wednesday with 5 bullets, moving up to 2nd place in the provisional rankings.

The wind conditions, fluctuating between 12 and 16 knots, provided a perfect playing field for the 212 participants taking part in this 3rd day of the iQFOil World Championships in Lanzarote. The day's races, in a Course Racing format, saw changes in position within the fleet.
In the men's race, Luuc van Opzeeland, the reigning world champion, maintained his lead despite less consistent results than the day before. Nicolas Goyard, who has been ill for several days and even vomited in the water in the morning before the start of the races, found the strength and resources to win all 5 of the day's races. The Frenchman made a giant leap in the provisional rankings, moving up from 15th to 2nd place.

On the women's side, Great Britain's Emma Wilson confirmed her domination by winning the day's 5 races, consolidating her 6-point lead over 2nd-placed Israeli Sharon Kantor. The Israeli competitors, 4 in number, stepped up their game on the 3rd day of competition, all finishing in the top 10.
From Thursday, the competitors will begin the final races and will be divided into a gold and silver fleet, with the races broadcast live streaming right through to the medal races on Saturday...
