Bernd Roediger wins at the buzzer

20/02/2024

After an epic day and 10 hours of competition in Omaezaki, Japan, the 1st event of the PWA IWT Unified Wave Tour season crowned Bernd Roediger and Motoko Sato.

On Tuesday, the 2nd day of the competition, all the competitors went into action with surprising results from the very first laps. The conditions were characterised by an onshore starboard side wind (weakening in the final stages) and waves. The race directors opted for the 2 best surfs and heats that were long enough for everyone to express themselves.
In these conditions, where it's difficult to express yourself, some of the top seeds soon disappear, like Philip Köster in the repechage and Thomas Traversa and Antoine Martin in the quarter-finals.

Winner of all his heats, Bernd Roediger is at ease in these conditions, which favour pure surfing. The Hawaiian pulled off the perfect hold-up in the final, moving from 3rd to 1st place in the last few seconds with a goiter scoring 7.5 points. Marcilio Browne, with his fluidity and style, led for most of the final, only to be edged out by the wire. Despite this 2nd place, the Brazilian, the reigning world champion, is playing with confidence and is looking forward to future challenges, particularly in Chile. 3rd place went to Victor Fernandez, who managed to make the conditions seem less onshore than they really were. Despite the wind dropping off in the final, he demonstrated his speed, aggression and eye-catching style. Morgan Noireaux finished 4th in the men's final.
In the women's final, local Motoko Sato confirmed her domination on home turf by winning once again, as she did in 2023. Her selectivity and ability to find the right waves made all the difference. 2nd place went to Sarah Hauser by just 0.47 points, while Maria Andres took 3rd place ahead of the young Maria Morales Navarro.
This 1st event of the PWA IWT Unified Wave Tour
at Omaezaki laid the foundations for what promises to be an interesting season, despite conditions that did not allow everyone to express themselves as they would have liked...
