A great start to the year in Perth

08/01/2024

During the festive season, Perth in Australia hosted the Windsurfer World Championships, a not-to-be-missed event, albeit a long way off this year for fans of this board. On the programme: almost 250 competitors, a unique atmosphere and a competition that confirms the growing interest in this class that doesn't take itself too seriously!

237 competitors, a majority of Australians but also Europeans and Japanese, wind and sun, all the elements were present at the South of Perth Yacht Club in Perth, Australia, from 29 December to 4 January for the Windsurfer World Championships.
For 7 days, the competitors had their hands full during this festive period, competing day after day in Course Racing and Slalom events, not forgetting the traditional Marathon on 1 January to kick off 2024 in style! In winds oscillating between 10 and 25 knots, the watchword remained the same throughout the week, with 50% competition and 50% fun, and still 5 categories present (A. Light / B. Medium-Light / C. Medium-Heavy / D. Heavy and Women), all racing together in the fleet races.

The big favourite, Australian Lars Kleppich, won the overall combined classification and the world title in Medium-Light, followed by his compatriot Josh Green, 1st in Light. 1st in the women's category, American Lanee Beaschel completed the podium (yes, you read that right, a woman!), while Australians Michael Lancey and Matty Whitnall were crowned in Medium-Heavy and Heavy. Among the more familiar names, Scott McKercher put in a fine performance, finishing 7th overall and 2nd in Heavy. Often at the front in these mixed competitions, the women made a strong impression with 3 representatives in the top 10, Lanee Beaschel 3rd, Italy's Bruna Ferracane 4th and Australia's Sarah Kenny 7th!
After this stopover in Australia, it's worth noting that the next Windsurfer World Championships will be returning to Europe from 16 to 22 September in San Pere Pescador on the Costa Brava in Spain.
