A fickle wind and Slalom

17/08/2023

It's been one day after another at the Allianz Sailing World Championships in the Netherlands, with light winds again on Wednesday. After 4 Slalom races for women, Emma Wilson extended her lead in the overall rankings, while the only race of the day in the men's category saw Nicolo Renna catch up with Luuc van Opzeeland.

On this final day of qualifying for the Allianz Sailing World Championships, the wind is once again proving elusive despite a packed programme, particularly for the women with 5 races on the day's programme. It was at 12.45pm that a breeze of between 7 and 11 knots finally set in, allowing us to switch to the Slalom format. Despite mood swings in the wind and a number of general recalls, the women managed to complete a total of 4 races, all of which went to England's Emma Wilson. A very consistent performer, she kept the lead in the event by 4 points over China's Zheng Yan, Israel's Shahar Tibi and France's Hélène Noesmoen.

In the men's race, the start originally scheduled for 2.30pm finally took place at 6pm, and the only valid race enabled Italy's Nicolo Renna to catch up with Dutchman Luuc van Opzeeland. Germany's Sebastian Kördel is 3rd, 2.7 points behind the top 2.
