3 questions to Sarah Hauser

09/11/2023

3rd in the Maui Strong Aloha Classic after a fine comeback in the double elimination, Sarah Hauser proves she's one of the best and takes the coveted title of vice world wave champion behind Sarah-Quita Offringa. Speaking to Windsurfjournal.com, she looks back on this performance and her 1st year on the PWA IWT Unified Wave Tour.

Windsurfjournal.com: Can you tell us about this Aloha Classic, your first round failure and your superb comeback in the double elimination?
Sarah Hauser: The first round didn't go so well. The heats were short (17 minutes) with the little wind we had. I tried too hard to be radical at the start, so I fell and didn't have time to recover, while the other competitors sailed well. As a result, for the double-handed race, I forced myself to try and score points before taking risks and it went better. I had the opportunity to take on a great sporting challenge as winning 6 heats in a row required a lot of physical and mental endurance. I had fun pushing myself in that way.

WJ: Thanks to this new circuit, you were crowned vice-world champion 2023 in waves. Was this a title you were hoping to achieve one day?
SH : Yes, I felt capable of it, but I wasn't sure I'd be able to do it this year, as I had to put windsurfing on the back burner because of my husband's health problems. In the end, I still managed to put in some good performances. The fact that I'd trained a lot in previous years paid off. Not only was I able to win the vice world champion title, but I also managed to maintain a balance between my life as a carer and my life as an athlete, and that too is a victory.

WJ : How do you feel about the PWA IWT Unified Wave Tour after its first year, and do you want to get more involved in the years to come?
SH: I think it's great. Of course, it's not perfect, and we'll have to build and improve, but I think it makes the tour more dynamic and gives more competitors from continents other than Europe the chance to take part in the World Cup. I hope it will continue, and I intend to do all I can to keep taking part!
