3 questions to Lohan Jules

24/05/2023

In 20th place in the overall ranking of the Défi Wind 2023, Lohan Jules decided to compete exclusively with fin. A risk that has paid off for him, despite the increasing presence of foils. Talking to Windsurfjournal.com, he looks back on a performance that still gives hope...

Windsurfjournal.com: You are a pretty good windfoiler, what made you decide to compete in the Wind Challenge only with a fin?
Lohan Jules: I have been windfoiling for a few years now, but my passion for the fin is still very much there. So when I found out that there were different categories in the Défi Wind, I said to myself that I would do the category that made me want to do it the most.

WJ: How were the 4 races where you were a regular finishing 17th, 26th, 19th and 20th?
LJ: The races went quite well for me. It was quite special because with the foils I sometimes had a bit of trouble knowing if I was well placed or not. Of course there were direct confrontations between Taty Frans, Andrea Cucchi and myself. We met in every heat and the difference was in the strategic decisions. Consistency on speed was the key to getting to the end!

WJ: Isn't it frustrating to be in the 2nd fiddle after the foil competitors and what do you think of the ever present fin vs foil debate?
LJ: From my point of view it can be a bit frustrating because as soon as it’s good the fin can be in front. I passed about fifteen windfoilers on the last leg of each race, but as we know, to do well in the Défi Wind you need good heading/speed and consistency. In this game, the foil is clearly superior to the fin. As far as the debate goes, I think there is no question that the foil is more efficient over long distances. On the other hand, in slalom, I think that in strong winds and on a wet course, the fin can still be ahead.
