3 questions to Jimmy Thiémé

18/07/2023

11th in the Gran Canaria Windsurf World Cup in the slalom discipline, Frenchman Jimmy Thiémé is also the first competitor to have sailed exclusively with a fin during the 10 valid races. He spoke to Windsurfjournal.com about his performance and the combination of fin and foil in competition.

Windsurfjournal.com: What were your ambitions for this PWA slalom event in Pozo?
Jimmy Thiémé: I came to Pozo with the ambition of finishing in the top 15, because we know that the level is high. Also, as far as the foils are concerned, when there's not more than 30 knots, it's really complicated to play with them. I'm very happy with my 11th place, I didn't do too badly. It was really difficult to compete with the foil as we had between 15 and 30 knots of wind during the 3 days of racing.

WJ: This fin/foil combination is the subject of a lot of debate. What is your point of view?
JT: I think what the AFF has done with the Brest Funboard Tour AFF (French championship) is good. In other words, below 15 knots it's just foiling and above 15 knots you can use a fin if the conditions are right. As far as the PWA World Tour is concerned, I think the best thing would be to split and have some fin legs and some foil legs. Or maybe do an all-foil tour or an all-fin tour! Ideally you don't want to mix the two, because in the end it creates too many problems at competitions, with lots of gear to carry. And you get bogged down in what to take and what not to take when you get on the water.

WJ: How do you see the development of the sport, and slalom in particular, with a foil support that is constantly expanding its range of use?
JT: It's true that for the development of foiling, there are a lot of competitions with often favourable winds for this support. So it's pretty good for the development of this discipline. But I've also noticed in the PWA events that some competitors are now only using foil and that's clearly starting to kill off the fin. That's why Taty Frans, Ingmar Daldorf and a few others and I came to Pozo with just a fin, and we tried to show that the fin is not dead in the face of the foil.
