Ruthless medal races

04/02/2024

The iQFOil World Championships in Lanzarote reached a climax on Saturday with a sensational final that saw major upsets on both the men's and women's sides. The final day of this Olympic class once again confirmed the exciting and unforgiving nature of the medal races.

With an easterly wind blowing between 9 and 11 knots, the competitors are ready to go after a long week of competition. In the women's category, Israeli Sharon Kantor sprang a surprise by beating British favourite Emma Wilson. Wilson, who had dominated throughout the week, was edged out in the grand final. An early start and a 5-second penalty cost Wilson precious time. Although she regained the lead, Kantor seized the opportunity to claim the title and secure a place at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games for her country.

The men's competition also offered a thrilling spectacle, with Italy's Nicolo Renna taking the title in the grand final against reigning world champion Luuc van Opzeeland. Renna, 3rd last year, reversed the roles this time, defying expectations to take 1st place. The final was close, but Renna showed her tactics and speed by starting on the right-hand side of the course on the final climb to take victory.
With less than 6 months to go to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, these iQFOil World Championships 2024 give a good idea of the forces at work, with many weeks of preparation and training still to go before the final deadline...
