In solidarity with Maui

24/08/2023

As you may have heard, part of the island of Maui in Hawaii recently suffered the devastating effects of a forest fire that ravaged the town of Lahaina. Although the area affected by this terrible tragedy is far from the epicentre of windsurfing on the island of Maui, further north, it's hard not to be moved by this real disaster.
On 8 August, 5 separate fires raged across the island, affecting Pulehu, 2 communities in Kula, Olinda and the western part of Maui, Hawaii. Of the fires that swept across the island, the town of Lahaina was the hardest hit and was completely destroyed. Everything has been lost: lives, history, homes and schools. The death toll continues to rise and hundreds of people are still missing. This natural disaster has been officially declared the deadliest in Hawaii's history and the deadliest in the United States in more than a century. But through all the devastation, one force has emerged: the power of community.
As those directly affected by the fires faced the destruction of their homes, their lives and their history, the famous Aloha Spirit brought everyone together to support the people of Lahaina. The community of Maui and the surrounding islands rallied to support family, friends and even complete strangers who had lost everything and had no resources even for basics like food and water. Members of this community include athletes such as Kai Lenny and Zane Schweitzer.
With this in mind, and while this part of the island is slowly healing and will no doubt take years to rebuild, the PWA IWT Unified Wave Tour has just confirmed that it will be hosting the Unified Wave Tour Finals this autumn. The event will be called the Maui Strong Aloha Classic and will take place between 23 October and 3 November at Hookipa. The aim of the event is to raise funds through global broadcasting and to promote local charities such as Maui Strong and the Maui Food Bank.
