3 questions to Marco Lang

09/03/2022

Last week, Austrian Marco Lang announced on social networks that he was ending his career on the PWA World Tour. For Windsurfjournal.com, he talks about the reasons behind his decision, which was difficult to take...

Windsurfjournal.com: Why did you decide to put an end to your career, 35 years old is still young in disciplines like slalom?
Marco Lang: For a few years already I have been heavily involved in the R&D of Duotone Windsurfing and in the last couple of years I took on more and more responsibilities. At times it was already becoming difficult to find a balance between being a professional windsurfer and developing new products. For me it is super important that when I do something that I give it 100% and that’s why I felt that I had to give up something. I had already reached many of my goals as a professional windsurfer and I really like my new job in the product management and that’s why I decided to stop my career as professional athlete.

WJ: You are also very involved in the development at Duotone, is this something you continue? What are your new projects?
ML: Yes, I would call it my new passion. My new job has similar feelings as being a pro windsurfer. I will never forget the moment when Pierre Mortefon won his first World Champion title. It felt like that I became World Champion because I was the main man behind the development of those WARP Sails. And it's the same if a customer comes to you and gives you some great feedback about the sails. This moments show me that I love what I do.

WJ: What are you most proud of after more than 10 years of career?
ML: I had many moments. I met so many great characters over the last few years and could build some new friendships, that’s definitely something which is really special in being a professional windsurfer. But my World Cup Win at Sylt in 2017 was my biggest moment. Sometimes I still can not believe it. That moment of standing on the podium in front of thousands spectators I will never forget.
