3 questions to Daida Moreno

19/07/2023

At the age of 45, Canarian Daida Moreno took her final bow at the Gran Canaria Windsurf World Cup in her home town of Pozo Izquierdo... The winner of 18 world wave titles on the PWA World Tour spoke to Windsurfjournal.com about her decision to call time on her international career.

Windsurfjournal.com: How do you explain such longevity, with 2 decades of winning almost everything in the wave discipline?
Daida Moreno: I have been competing since 1997 and have lived the windsurfer's lifestyle ever since. I pretty much stopped travelling when I got cancer, studied physiotherapy, had a baby and built my clinic here in Pozo. It is time to settle down and live without the stress of competition and find my own happiness with my family. For me it is all about motivation and there is nothing else I can show in windsurfing in Pozo. Winning this year's event number 22 at my home spot was the perfect time to say goodbye to high level competition.

WJ: What have you learnt from all these years at the highest level?
DM: I have learnt to be disciplined and demanding of myself, which has had its good and bad points, and this has helped me in other moments of my life to become stronger and more determined to achieve my dreams.

WJ : If you could go back in time, what would you say to the young woman who started to make a name for herself at the Pozo Izquierdo spot in the late 90s?
DM: There is nothing I can blame myself for, if I could go back in time I would do exactly the same... I would continue windsurfing all my life and keep up with the women's level, at least here in my home spot. Will stay involved in windsurfing as much as I can, just to live now!
