3 questions to Andrew Brown

21/04/2022

Originally from Scotland and trained by Nick Dempsey (3 times Olympic windsurfing medalist), Andrew Brown has just won the Trofeo Princesa Sofia in the Balearic Islands, confirming the good form of the British delegation on the iQFOil. Speaking to Windsurfjournal.com, he talks about this expected victory with a man to watch closely in the coming months...

Windsurfjournal.com: Could you introduce yourself for those who don't know you yet?
Andrew Brown: I was born in Glasgow, Scotland and grew up and progressed at the local Loch Insh Watersports windsurf club in the Scottish Highlands. It's freezing in winter so we go skiing!

WJ: How did you experience the transition from the RS:X to the iQFOil?
AB: I moved up more than 15 kilos in a year. It was tough but with effort I managed to completely change my body! I also had to get used to the quick action and decision making of the foil racing. At the start there were many crashes! This is the first event where I managed to sail clean racing without the protest room or a crash with other boards… only a few into the water! The level of the foiling will be insane, everyone is getting better and it will take a lot of effort to stay at the top everyone developing fast and pushing. The GBR youths did the best tack I have ever seen on the iQFOil Class yesterday so maybe soon we will be foiling the whole race…

WJ: How would you sum up this event in Palma de Mallorca that you have just won?
AB: The event went fabulously and I had a really consistent week of racing with only one result outside the top 10. Really tough battles with nico Renna and luuc. With the top 3 elimination it really all came down to the last 100 meters and really happy that I came across the line as the champion of Palma!
