Slalom and changes in Patras

13/05/2023

With lighter winds than the previous days, the iQFOil European Championships in Patras, Greece, see the first slalom races on Friday, an opportunity to see new faces and to move up the rankings.

After 3 days of intense racing in winds rarely below 25 knots, the Patras spot shows a new face this Friday for the 4th day of the iQFOil European Championships with calm weather. And while the day seemed to get off to a bad start, by 3pm the breeze had risen to between 13 and 15 knots, allowing the competitors to start the Slalom discipline after 12 races on Course Racing in 72 hours.
The German Sebastian Koerdel, winner of 3 of the day's 4 races, showed his speed in the light breeze to maintain his lead in the overall standings. Behind him, the Dutchmen Luuc van Opzeeland and Huig-Jan Tak are fighting for the places of honour on the podium. Less regular than the previous days, the Frenchman Nicolas Goyard slips down to 4th, just in front of another Dutchman (3 in the top 5!), Kiran Badloe. The winner of one of the day's races, the Frenchman Adrien Mestre, is now 11th, on the doorstep of the medal race.

In the women's category, Israel's Sharon Kantor remains in the lead after 4 validated slalom races, but this Friday is the day of her compatriot Shahar Tibi, who is now in 2nd place overall after 2 wins. Still in second place this morning, the other Israeli, Tamar Steinberg, loses 7 places after a style exercise in which she had more difficulties. The Spanish Pilar Lamadrid remains in 3rd place. The Frenchwoman Delphine Cousin had a great day with a victory and two 5th places and is now 11th, Hélène Noesmoen 14th.
Saturday is the penultimate day of the iQFOil European Championships with important places to be validated for the medal races on Sunday.
