Big fights in Patras

12/05/2023

The iQFOil European Championships in Greece are still very windy on Thursday, with the planned Marathon giving way to four new races in the Racing Course and a day that saw Sebastian Koerdel take the lead in the men's race and Sharon Kontar confirm her leadership in the women's race.

The days in Patras, Greece, are very similar with the wind rarely dropping below 25 knots. The Marathon was finally postponed for safety reasons and the Racing Race was favoured by the race directors.
Impressive the day before, the Frenchman Nicolas Goyard is not doing so well and the German Sebastian Koerdel steals the show. With 2 victories, a 2nd place and an 11th place, GER-220 takes the lead of the race, followed by the Dutchman Luc van Opzeeland who is also very regular on this 3rd day of competition. Nicolas Goyard loses 2 places and is now 3rd while, not far from there, his brother Thomas has a great day and is now 5th.

In the women's fleet, the Israeli Sharon Kantor and Tamar Steinberg continue to impress and increase their lead in the overall ranking. Only the Spanish Pilar Lamadrid managed to keep up with the pace set by ISR-390 and ISR-216 and is now back in 3rd place in the provisional overall ranking. Like the French Hélène Noesmoen, 10th, the favourites are being pushed around and still have 2 days to come back.
On Friday, the wind is again forecasted in Patras, Greece, less strong than the previous 3 days and the opportunity to finally reschedule the long awaited Marathon where the points count double...
