World titles up for grabs

10/11/2024

The third day of the Fly! ANA Yokosuka, Miura Windsurf World Cup 2024 did not live up to all its promises on the wind front, but it did nonetheless allow two more eliminations to be completed in the men's category and one in the women's category, in much lighter conditions than on previous days. At the end of the day, Marion Mortefon and Johan Søe are leading the competition, while the race for the world titles remains as indecisive as ever.

In the women's race, the battle for the title was tight between Justine Lemeteyer and Marion Mortefon. Mortefon took the lead by winning the fourth elimination of the week, giving her a 3.3-point lead over the rest of the field. She must win this event if she is to have any hope of clinching the world title, while Lemeteyer must not finish outside the top 3. The latter, despite being in a favourable position, made a number of crucial mistakes in the final, with a fall on her third jibe forcing her to retire. Now, with a lead of just 2.3 points over Tamar Steinberg, 4th, Lemeteyer has no room for error.

In the men's fleet, Johan Søe dominated the day with an impressive double, winning both of the day's finals. With a perfect score of 2.1 points, after shaking off a ninth place, he takes the lead in the rankings with a 4.6 point advantage. Meanwhile, the duel for the world title between Pierre Mortefon and Daniele Benedetti intensified. Mortefon's lead had shrunk to just 2.3 points. Benedetti, in top form, recorded his best result with a second place, keeping the suspense alive for the final heats.
The weather looks more favourable for Monday, with 14 to 18 knots expected, before an uncertain final day. The briefing will take place at 8.30am, with the start scheduled for 9.30am. Monday could well prove decisive in crowning the new world champions.
