Ups and downs in Sotavento

31/07/2024

The 6th day of the Fuerteventura PWA World Cup in the Canaries, and the 1st dedicated to the Foil Slalom and Slalom X disciplines, saw Marion Mortefon and Daniele Benedetti take the lead. Tuesday was marked by fickle winds and disappointments for some of the favourites, such as Maciek Rutkowski and Pierre Mortefon...

Capricious in the morning, and for a few days now, it was in the afternoon that the wind finally picked up in Sotavento for this Fuerteventura PWA World Cup for the first Foil Slalom races of the week. At around 8-15 knots to open the hostilities, the wind died down before returning at the end of the day with gusts of up to 20 knots.
In the women's race, Marion Mortefon dominated proceedings. The Frenchwoman put in an almost perfect performance, with three consecutive wins and a second place. With a total of 2.1 points, she has a comfortable lead over her rivals. Justine Lemeteyer is her closest rival with 7.7 points, thanks in no small part to her victory in the final round of the day. Blanca Alabau, the reigning world champion, remains in the race with great consistency and is just 0.3 points behind Lemeteyer.

In the men's race, Daniele Benedetti caused a sensation by taking first place in the provisional rankings. After a solid third place and a win in the second elimination, the Italian has a lead of 5.3 points. Noah Vinther, despite his recent arrival on the PWA circuit, is a serious contender with third and sixth places. Amado Vrieswijk, current vice-world champion, completes the provisional podium. Among the favourites, things didn't necessarily go according to plan, as in the case of Pierre Mortefon, who started the day in fifth place before being eliminated in the quarter-finals. Enrico Marotti was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the first heat before bouncing back with a second-place finish. Maciek Rutkowski didn't have much luck on this first day either, as he was eliminated in the semi-finals of the first elimination and then in the quarter-finals of the next, twice being hampered by competitors who were more committed to the jibe. 15th at the end of this first day and Rutkowski is already under pressure.
