The competition continues without Philip Köster

25/10/2024

The Aloha Classic Playa Surf Grand Final kicks off on Thursday in Hookipa with its first surprise of the week, the elimination of Philip Köster on day one. And with an optimistic weather forecast for the following days, the show has clearly only just begun!

The conditions on this first day of the Aloha Classic Playa Surf Grand Final are fun, but far from perfect. And even if the wave height and wind strength are decent, the combination of these two elements isn't ideal for making this a great Hookipa spot. Nevertheless, head judge Boujmaa Guilloul decided to launch the hostilities with mast-sized waves at the best time of the day. Favourites Marcilio Browne and Victor Fernandez passed their heat with flying colours to advance directly to round 5, displaying an impressive level of skill and perfect control. In contrast, five-time world champion Philip Köster was stunned in his first heat by Takara Ishii and Vincent Beauvarlet. This unexpected defeat saw Köster go through to the repechage round. This time up against Japan's Takuma Sugi and Ryu Noguchi, G-44 only finished third and was therefore out of the running in this elimination. At the Aloha Classic, the emphasis is generally on pure surfing. And, once again, Philip Köster is out of the competition.

For his part, Marcilio Browne stood out with the best score of the day, an impressive 7.5 points. Morgan Noireaux, meanwhile, qualified for round 5 with two fine waves to his credit. Regulars on the spot, Antoine Martin, Kai Lenny, Levi Siver, Bernd Roediger and Camille Juban all qualified without a hitch, as did Thomas Traversa, Marc Paré, Arthur Arutkin, Jules Denel and Vincent Beauvarlet from Guadeloupe, Thursday's big surprise! The next heats promise to be intense, with decisive clashes such as the rest of the repechage round and Marino Gil already in danger after a complicated heat against Kai Lenny and Bernd Roediger.
In the women's event, the only qualifying round to be contested saw Shawna Cropas, Toia Sanjurjo and Svenja Chudoba join the top seeds. Current leader Lina Erpenstein will have to face some great opposition from the outset, including Coraline Foveau and Maria Andrés.
