Kick-off in Portugal

09/09/2025

The town of Portimão, in the heart of the Algarve, will host the iQFOiL U23 World Championships from 6 to 13 September. With its steep cliffs, sunny climate and steady thermal breezes, the bay in front of the Santa Catarina fortress offers the ideal setting for a high-level competition.

No fewer than 143 young athletes from 30 nations gathered for six days of intense racing. This competition represents a pivotal stage between the Youth and Senior categories, allowing up-and-coming windsurfers to compete internationally and gain experience before joining the world elite. From the first day of racing on Monday 8 September, winds of 15 to 18 knots provided perfect conditions for spectacular battles in the Race Racing format. This type of course, consisting of upwind and downwind legs, tests tactics, speed and endurance, with several races held each day.

In the men's event, Australia's Grae Morris, already a silver medallist at the Paris 2024 Games, made a strong showing by winning all four races. Behind him, Italy's Federico Pilloni, 2024 Junior World Champion and already making his mark in the Senior ranks, showed promising consistency, while Israel's Gur Lavi Prag completed the provisional podium. In the women's event, Norway's Mina Mobekk, 2023 European Champion, shared the lead with Estonia's Emma Millend. Her compatriot Maya Gysler, 2024 U23 World Championship silver medallist, currently occupies third place.
With such a high level of competition right from the start, this week promises to be exciting, combining speed, strategy and sporting intensity, all in the sunny setting of the Algarve.
