Jenna de Rosnay in Eve s outfit

With you, we continue

This week's vintage nod is Jenna de Rosnay, born Jenna Severson on 7 March 1963 in Laguna Beach, California, who established herself as one of the most prominent figures in windsurfing in the 1980s, particularly in the speed discipline. She grew up by the water in Hawaii, the daughter of photographer and founder of Surfer magazine, John Severson. From childhood, she surfed and developed a deep connection with the ocean.
It was in 1981, after her marriage to French baron Arnaud de Rosnay, an adventurer and photographer, that she discovered windsurfing in Mauritius. From 1982 onwards, Jenna de Rosnay broke the women's world speed record for windsurfing several times, becoming a global pioneer in this discipline. Her most frequently cited record is 27.09 knots in 1984, set in Weymouth, on the Isle of Portland in the United Kingdom.
Her image in advertising visuals at the time, athletic, elegant and high-performing, helped to popularise women's windsurfing and inspire many female practitioners in a sport still largely associated with men.
This advertising visual for Neil Pryde wetsuits, recently posted on the Windsurfjournal.com Facebook group, perfectly illustrates the communication strategy developed around Jenna de Rosnay. The slogan ‘Jenna de Rosnay in her wetsuit. Or is it her birthday suit?’ plays on the ambiguity between technical protection and suggested nudity. This campaign highlights the notion of a ‘second skin’.
