In a small group in Silvaplana

29/08/2025

From 18 to 24 August 2025, Lake Silvaplana, perched at an altitude of 1,800 metres in the Swiss Alps, hosted the fourth edition of the Vanora EngadinWind iQFOiL International Games. This competition offered a week full of contrasts: breathtaking scenery, intense suspense and spectacular races, but also challenges posed by unpredictable weather.

The first day of racing is marked by exceptional races, carried by the famous local wind, the Maloja. Competitors face gusts exceeding 20 knots, offering fast, technical and adrenaline-filled races. But the mountains quickly remind us of their unpredictable nature, and several days of unstable winds suspend the regattas, testing the athletes' patience and perseverance.

Beyond the action on the water, the site put the competitors' physical condition to the test. The high altitude reduces oxygen concentration by around 20%, leading to faster fatigue, slower recovery and an increased need for hydration. Concentration, precision of movement and responsiveness are all additional challenges to overcome. Finally, on the last day, the Maloja wind returned with a vengeance, allowing the race committee to finalise the preliminary series before the Medal Series. The best riders competed for the podium in spectacular duels. This edition of the iQFOiL Games will be remembered as an event where the wind, altitude and talent of the athletes combined to create a unique spectacle.
