With you, we continue

This week's vintage gem is a photo posted on the Facebook group Windsurfjournal.com a few weeks ago, featuring Hoyle and Diane Schweitzer at a boat show in California, USA.
In the early 1970s, windsurfing was still just an experimental idea: a sail placed on a board, among other attempts that never came to fruition. Like the automobile before its democratisation by Henry Ford, it took more than an invention: it took an industrial vision and a distribution strategy. This is precisely what Hoyle and Diane Schweitzer brought to the table.
Alongside Jim Drake
, they helped transform a technical prototype into an accessible product. But their decisive role began after the original Windsurfer was developed. The Schweitzers bought Drake's shares, invested all their resources in the venture and structured the commercial development of the board. Without abundant capital or an established network, they travelled to trade shows, organised regattas, contacted the first practitioners one by one and distributed the ‘Windsurfer Newsletter’, typed and sent manually by Diane.
Their marketing approach, with slogans that have become iconic such as ‘Wherever There's Wind and Water’, gave the discipline a strong identity. They weren't just selling a board: they were selling a lifestyle. Gradually, Europe embraced the phenomenon. The Windsurfer became a symbol of freedom, visible on car roofs far beyond the beaches.
Excellent sailors themselves, Hoyle and Diane understood their product intimately. Despite lengthy legal battles over the patent, the essential point was achieved: the sport took off. Their contribution was not limited to a technical invention. They structured, promoted and popularised windsurfing on a global scale, transforming a marginal idea into a major board sport.
