Great battles in Denmark

23/09/2024

From 7 to 14 September 2024, the small Danish coastal town of Hvide Sande was the scene of the IFCA Grand Slam Fin Slalom World Championships. This competition marked a turning point in the history of fin slalom with a brand new format, bringing together for the first time all the divisions - Juniors, Youth, Masters, Men and Women - on the same site. This major event brought together 107 athletes from 15 nations, ready to do battle in often capricious weather conditions.

The first two days were marked by waiting. Weak wind conditions forced the competitors to wait, leaving the race committee hanging on the weather forecasts. However, the mood remained upbeat, and the athletes took advantage of the lull to adjust their equipment and make friends with their international rivals. But on the third day, the elements finally broke loose. Strong winds in excess of 30 knots, accompanied by intermittent rain, transformed the Danish spot into a veritable sporting arena. The eliminations began in difficult conditions, putting the slalom racers to the test. Falls, broken equipment and even a few rescues punctuated the first races. The next two days brought more moderate winds, around 15 knots, but the competition was still very close in all categories.

Among the week's highlights, in the women's division, the battle between Jenna Gibson and Justine Lemeteyer was particularly fierce, while in the Junior division, Turkey's Çinar Tuncar and France's Luca Pires battled it out for top spot. Italy's Bruno Martini dominated the event and was crowned world champion in the men's category. England's Jenna Gibson overtook Justine Lemeteyer to win the women's title. In the youth category, Sacha Fortune shone, taking the title in the Youth division. In the Junior category, France's Tess Sermet put in a remarkable performance, winning not only the Junior Women's title but also the Youth title. As for the Masters, Gunnar Asmussen retained his title and overtook Andrea Cucci as the best Master.
