Four new races in Lanzarote

01/02/2025

The 100 athletes taking part in the iQFOiL International Games in Lanzarote once again enjoyed exceptional conditions on Friday. With north-easterly winds in excess of 20 knots and heavy seas, each fleet was able to contest four races. Emma Wilson and Johan Søe are in the lead with two days to go...

The first race of the day took place on a trapezoid course, with the men racing on an outside track. However, due to unstable and gusty conditions in this area, the race directors opted for a classic course for the next three races. The strong winds provided an ideal playing field for another day of intense battles on the water, enabling the top performers to consolidate their positions while others made significant advances in the overall rankings.

In the men's fleet, 20-year-old Italian Manolo Modena impressed by winning three of the day's four races and finishing fourth in the final heat. This performance enabled him to climb to fifth place overall and establish himself as one of the young talents to watch. For his part, despite a less fruitful day than the day before, Johan Søe retains the lead in the overall standings, 16 points ahead of Nicolas Goyard. Nicolò Renna completes the provisional podium.
In the women's category, Emma Wilson has regained the lead thanks to two heat wins. She now has a five-point lead over Israeli Shahar Tibi, who had a more mixed day but remains in touch in second place. Germany's Theresa Steinlein climbs to third place thanks to her consistency throughout the week, while Anastasia Valkevich, despite a win, is just one point off the podium.
On Saturday, the competitors will tackle the eagerly-awaited Marathon, a course linking Marina Rubicón to the island of Los Lobos, off the coast of Fuerteventura, before returning to Lanzarote. A true test of endurance, this one-hour race will test the consistency and stamina of the athletes. The competition concludes on Sunday with the medal races, a knockout format in which the top eight finishers from each fleet will compete for the first titles of the year.
