First heats at Hookipa

With you, we continue

On Wednesday, the Hookipa break on the island of Maui provided a spectacular start to the Quatro Maui Pro, a 5-star event of the PWA WWT World Wave Tour, with mast-high waves and relatively light winds. These are typical conditions at the famous Hawaiian spot, which immediately allowed the circuit’s top wave riders to shine.

On this first day, three riders stood out in particular, setting the pace from the very first heats: Morgan Noireaux, Kai Lenny and Bernd Roediger. Noireaux delivered the most consistent performance of the day with a total of 14.20 points in his heat, which was also the highest overall score. He particularly impressed with a wave scored at 8.77 thanks to a powerful and fluid combination, punctuated by an extremely committed goiter in the critical section. A perfectly controlled aerial manoeuvre that will remain one of the highlights of the day. On home turf, Kai Lenny also rose to the occasion. Very much at ease in these changing conditions, he secured the second-highest heat total with 13.27 points, once again confirming his versatility and his understanding of the Hookipa break. For his part, Bernd Roediger added an explosive touch with a wave scoring 8.07 points, one of the day’s highest individual scores, showcasing his style.

In the women’s event, the day was dominated by France’s Marine Hunter, who posted the highest score of 8.67 points. She finished ahead of Switzerland’s Pauline Katz, France’s Coraline Foveau and Germany’s Lina Erpenstein. All four advance directly to the semi-finals, whilst the rest of the field will have to battle it out for the remaining places.
Earlier in the day, the Challenger Rounds whittled a field of 20 riders down to four qualifiers for the main draw: Graham Ezzy, Francisco Goya, Casey Hauser and Levi Lenz. The competition is now entering a more intense phase, in which every heat will count.
