Close foil duels

16/08/2025

The third day of competition in Alaçati, Turkey, at the IFCA Grand Slam Fin & Foil Slalom World Championships began with hopes of finally seeing the Slalom Fin races get underway. But once again, it was the foil that ruled the day, carried by winds oscillating between 10 and 15 knots. Two complete eliminations were contested, making each point even more valuable with the introduction of the first discard, allowing riders to erase their worst result.

In the Youth category, Sacha Fortune regained the lead after capitalising on mistakes made by his closest rival, Denmark's Kasper Nielsen. France's Brendan Lorho put in a solid and consistent performance in the third and fourth heats, moving him up to third place overall. Behind them, Dutch rider Matthijs Pos and Italian Gabriele Prosperi are neck and neck, separated by just one point.

On the women's side, Damla Kurtdemir retains her lead, still closely followed by Melis Bas. But it is Ruya Ugurlu who is making the biggest impression, moving up several places thanks to a series of strong races. Six races and three discards have already reshuffled the deck in this category. In the Open category, Johan Søe continues to dominate the competition, untouchable at the top. However, the application of the first discard has led to significant changes behind him, reshuffling the top 10 positions.
Despite the wind dying down in the late afternoon, the day offered plenty of speed and suspense. All eyes are now on Saturday's weather forecast, with an early start to the programme and the hope of finally seeing the Slalom Final get underway.
