Bob van de Burgt s new challenge

19/02/2026

With you, we continue

In the summer of 2026, Bob van de Burgt will take on a challenge of exceptional magnitude: setting a new world record for distance windsurfed in 24 hours. His goal is clear and measurable: to cover at least 800 kilometres without interruption, day and night, on the Grevelingenmeer, a lake and former sea inlet in the south-west of the Netherlands.

This project is a continuation of a journey already marked by commitment and endurance. In 2024, the Dutchman crossed the North Sea, covering nearly 400 kilometres, a feat requiring meticulous weather coordination and extraordinary mental strength (see our article of 9 October 2024). In 2026, the logic changed: it was no longer just a matter of braving the elements, but of holding out physically and mentally for 24 consecutive hours. This attempt, dubbed ‘Race Against Time’, was above all a test of pure endurance, where managing effort, fatigue and concentration would be crucial.

However, the challenge goes beyond sporting performance. As with his previous initiatives, Bob van de Burgt is using this attempt to support a charitable cause. The funds raised will be donated to the Dutch foundation Spieren voor Spieren, which is committed to fighting muscular diseases in children. The organisation funds projects aimed at speeding up diagnosis and improving treatment, with the support of many top athletes. At the heart of the campaign is 11-year-old Lucas, the ambassador for the operation. He suffers from Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a progressive genetic disorder that causes a gradual loss of muscle strength. In the absence of a cure, the disease progresses inexorably, giving this sporting endeavour a powerful symbolic dimension: every hour counts.
Achieving the record will depend on favourable weather conditions. A waiting period has been defined for weeks 24 and 25 of the year (between 8 and 21 June), with priority given to 11 and 12 June. Fallback dates are planned for the following weeks if necessary. Supported in particular by his main partner Howden, Bob van de Burgt is preparing to turn an endurance feat into a concrete lever for medical research.
