An intense day

09/02/2026

With you, we continue

The second day of the iQFOiL International Games in Lanzarote confirmed the intensity that had been predicted at the start of the event. After a hard-fought first day, competitors had to contend with constantly changing conditions on Sunday, testing their ability to adapt and their tactical precision.

The course was repositioned near the lighthouse, exposing the fleet to slightly stronger swells than the previous day. The wind, still blowing from the north-northwest, was weaker at the start of the day before gradually strengthening. This forced the race committee to adjust the programme: a single Sprint Slalom race was launched for the men, before switching to the Upwind Sprint format. Three races were held for the men and four for the women, with upwind starts and fleets divided into series, where the quality of timing and clean starts made all the difference.

In the men's competition, the overall standings have been completely shaken up. Italy's Federico Pilloni, still in the U23 category, had a very strong day, allowing him to take the lead in the overall standings, overtaking Britain's Finn Hawkins. France's Yun Pouliquen now occupies third place, while Spain's Nacho Baltasar, also U23, remains in fourth place.
The women's competition remains dominated by Emma Wilson. Already victorious in last year's event, the British sailor has strengthened her lead with three more wins and a third place finish. Israel's Sharon Kantor moves up to second place, ahead of Tamar Steinberg, now in third. Italy's Marta Maggetti, the reigning Olympic champion, is in fourth place, still within reach of the podium.
This second day highlights the importance of consistency, reading the water and mastering the starts for the rest of the week in Lanzarote.
