Action in Palma

09/04/2025

From 28 March to 5 April, it was back to school in Palma de Mallorca in the Balearic Islands for the world's Olympic sailing elite. More than 800 crews turned out for the traditional Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca, which marks the start of the season every year and is often the first test of performance for the Olympic classes. After the iQFOiL International Games in Lanzarote in the Canaries, this competition was one of the highlights of the start of the season.

In the men's event, after a week of very varied conditions, Australian Grae Morris won the final in a single race. The Paris 2024 Olympic silver medallist led the race all week and took advantage of the new format of the final to beat his rivals on the final day. Italy's Nicolo Renna and France's Adrien Mestre took silver and bronze respectively. Mestre had a fine final day, winning his quarter-final and then his semi-final before finishing on the third step of the podium. With Louis Pignolet 4th and Nicolas Goyard 7th, the French delegation placed 3 competitors in the top seven. Winner in Lanzarote a few weeks earlier, Denmark's Johan Søe finished 11th after completely missing his penultimate day of racing.

In the women's race, England's Emma Wilson was out in front. As in Lanzarote a few weeks earlier, she was in the lead throughout the week, and confirmed her lead on the final day of the race. China's Zheng Yan finished 2nd, followed by New Zealand's Veerle Ten Have. Like Adrien Mestre, France's Lola Sorin had a great week, qualifying for the quarter-finals and then the semi-finals to reach the last four. PWA World Champion in Foil Slalom, Justine Lemeteyer only finished 42nd in this event...
