A windless final in Mallorca

03/11/2024

The iQFOiL Youth and Junior World Championship came to a close on Saturday at Sa Ràpita in Mallorca, crowning new world champions in the U17 and U19 classes from among the 375 young competitors in attendance. The competition was marked by high-flying performances and highlighted the future of the sport.

The week of competition in Mallorca, Spain, was intense, with varied conditions that sometimes forced the organisers to interrupt the races. After the decisive races last Thursday, a weather warning issued by the Balearic authorities kept the competitors ashore on Friday, due to forecasts of a storm. On Saturday, the sun returned, but with no wind, preventing any further racing and in particular the medal races from running smoothly. Thursday's final rankings sealed the podiums for this 2024 edition.
The young competitors in this edition offered a promising glimpse of the next generation of Olympic windsurfers. Their next major international event will be the iQFOiL International Games, in March 2025, in Cadiz. The next world championship will be held in Brest, France, in July.
