A Wednesday disrupted by storms

27/11/2025

The third day of the 2025 iQFOiL Senior European Championships got off to a promising start in Sferracavallo. Sunshine, mild temperatures and a strengthening south-westerly wind promised a great race for all participants. The race committee stuck to the planned schedule, sending the women's fleet out onto the water first, followed by the men's Gold fleet a few minutes later.

Conditions are ideal for a Slalom series, with winds around 8 knots. The men complete a full round, divided into four heats. Unfortunately, on the women's side, no start procedure is launched before the weather changes. In fact, a squall line arrived much earlier than expected, forcing the committee to immediately interrupt the races. As a safety measure, all fleets were sent back to shore. Despite a brief lull later in the afternoon, the wind never really returned. At 3:30 p.m., the decision was made: AP flag on A, putting a definitive end to the day's programme.

However, this single men's race changed the overall standings. France's Nicolas Goyard took advantage of this to take the lead in the event. He is now followed by the Paris 2024 Olympic bronze medallist, Luuc van Opzeeland of the Netherlands, while reigning world champion Andy Brown remains firmly in the top three.
There are three days of competition left, and everything is still up for grabs. The racers are hoping for more favourable conditions to fully relaunch the battle for the European title, with their motivation intact despite the vagaries of the Sicilian weather.
