A thrilling finale in Portimão

14/09/2025

After five intense days of competition in Portimão, the iQFOiL U23 World Championships lived up to all expectations. Between strong winds at the start of the week, light and unstable conditions later on, and varied formats, the young athletes had to demonstrate versatility, strategy and endurance to hope to reach the world championship title.

This edition also had a special flavour, as it served as a test run for a new format for the finals ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Inspired by the desire to reward consistency while maintaining suspense, this system offers a ‘double chance’ to the leader of the overall ranking: they can only be dethroned by being beaten twice in the final confrontation. An approach that is both fair and spectacular.

The tension is at its peak among the women. After quarter-finals and semi-finals full of twists and turns, Norway's Mina Mobekk, who was leading after the preliminary rounds, sees her ambitions thwarted by her rivals. New Zealand's Stella Bilger seizes her chance in the Super Final to claim the world title, ahead of her compatriot Aimee Bright, while Mobekk completes the podium.
On the men's side, the scenario was just as thrilling. While Italy's Federico Pilloni and Spain's Nacho Baltasar Summers dominated the intermediate stages, Australia's Grae Morris had the last word. Despite a poor performance in the final, he bounced back in the Super Final to win with authority. Summers took second place, with Italy's Leonardo Tomasini in third.
With this spectacular outcome, Portimão will remain a pivotal stage for the discipline, marked by the emergence of a format designed for both athletes and the public.
